a toast to making a toast <>

Anyone who has met me will tell you that I’m pretty outgoing. And I like to talk. I talk a lot. But I really don’t like having an audience. Public speaking turns me into a sweaty palmed gibbering wreck. So I do not envy the peeps who stand up and speak at weddings. But I am so glad that they do. I absolutely love wedding speeches. I love hearing the stories. The proud father of the bride sharing embarrassing childhood stories. The groom, thankful to a room full of people for sharing in a magical day, breath taken away by his gorgeous wife. And the best man – I’ve cried tears of laughter so many times now and always seem to come away feeling like I’ve learned something rather awesome about my couples. And then there are those who break with tradition. The bride who wants (and rightly so) her own say. The mother of the groom overflowing with pride. The best women with so many stories to tell. The couple who stand together to start their married life as they mean to go on – as a team. The bridesmaids, sisters and friends who just want to say “you guys are awesome”. And the musicians. Oh I do love a musical speech. It doesn’t have to be a McFly-esque masterpice. A simple rap, a self penned ballad or a beautiful cover version will do just fine. And everybody loves a surprise – unexpected treats, be they musical in nature or otherwise, are always good. Like the time Dey produced a stunning printed portfolio for Gem to show her how pride he is of her, or the eternity ring that Chris produced for Sam. The hardhat whipped out by a groom as he introduced his best man (and younger brother) or the kilt wearing Dutch best man who juggled mini baby bell. Props are your friend! But above all else, it’s the emotion that gets me every time. A good honest speech full of sincerity and love…that’s what it’s all about. So if you’ve got a speech to do and you’re feeling a bit nervous – don’t be. Just speak from the heart. Tell it how it is. And if in doubt, hum a wee melody and hope for the best.
